Emily Mason is one such artist — the daughter of Alice Trumbull Mason, a founding member of the first generation of American abstract artists. She painted luminous and lyrical landscapes that hover on the edge of figuration. Harbor, 1994, an oil painting on canvas is a fine example of her late style in which fields of vivid and rich color interact and combine to create an evocative abstract composition — in this case, as the title suggests, an undulating body of water abutting land.
